Prior to 1986, students receiving athletic scholarships from Division I
schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association were required only
to have a C average in their high school grades. Because many of these
athletes failed to graduate,
a new standard ( Proposition 48) was adopted in which athletes were
required to have both a C average, and a combined math and verbal SAT score
of at least 700.It was thought that this standard might have a
disproportionate effect on minority athletes,
and a substantial continuing survey, begun in 1986, was designed to measure
its effect on graduation of student athletes. I will report on the results
of this survey.
